The Pickle Jar
August 12-16 Part 2
Hey, checked all the "to do" boxes so I can finally sit down and finish the Pickle Jar. Thank you for your patience. Let's relaunch and get back to the Pickleverse.
Pickleball Vacation: Want to get your Caribbean pickleball vibe fired up? Pickleball Visions (our good friend Donna) has blacked out to try some travel pickleball. Imagine yourself whacking that plastic ball around under the Jamaican sun and then sipping your favorite beverage pool or seaside. For more information follow this link: https://pickleballinparadise.com/trip/central-pa-pickleball-players-at-sandals-south-coast. It is for 2025.
Section 6 - Line Call Rules: There still seems to be a lot of time lost on debating line calls. I will put a link to the rule book at the end of this blurb but here are the basics - in recreation play or non-officiated games the receiving team has the responsibility to make the line call, to call a ball out you need to clearly see the ball is not touching the line, if you don't see the gap check with your partner, if your partner is not certain you MAY appeal to your opponent for a call, if you appeal to your opponent what they say stands, and if no one can say the ball was clearly in - IT IS OUT. Move on to the next point. This rec play (wait, you guys aren't wagering on games are you?) and some of these calls are hard to make so please display some modicum of grace and accept the call. I have found the number of times I believed I got a bad call generally equals out over time with the ones I thought were going to go against me. A little side note, and I have done this at times, much to my partner's chagrin, is overrule a bod out call with one that benefits your opponent. Bottom line, relax, have fun and be kind. Here is the rule book (line calls can be found on page 30), https://usapickleball.org/docs/USA-Pickleball-Official-Rulebook-2024-v1.pdf
Team Pickleball: Previously I shared an email from Drew (State College YMCA) explaining a prospective session of team pickleball in September and October. They were looking for captains and co-captains last I heard.. At the end of the month the captains will draft their team. When the time arrives, I will let you know the time has come to declare for the draft. If you would like a copy of the email about the team pickleball endeavour let me know and I will resend it to you.
Portage Pickleball Palooza: There will be a round robin style tournament at the "new" courts in Portage, PA. They have men's, women's, and mixed matches with 4 skill levels and 3 age groups open. So if you aren't into Bowling Green you could head down the road and have some fun and maybe bring home some hardware. Below is a copy of their flier.
One Day Fun Day Tournament: Due to the weather the tournament was postponed until August 24th. The new date casued 2 of the Centre County/Briner Team to drop out due to travel plans. I am happy to announce we have found substitute teams and will be shooting for the Cup! I will announce the teams in a future Pickle note.
Tip Of The Week: I'm toast so I'm going to keep make this quick. Life is short, have fun out there.
