The Pickle Jar
July 1-5
This will probably be a pint sized Pickle Jar. Being on IR (determined to be a hamstring issue) I'm not around the courts as much so I don't have a lot of content for this week. Let's head off into the Pickleverse and see where it takes us.
C3 Sports: C3 Sports has gone into their standard summer shut down.
The Centre: I am awaiting confirmation from staff for Wednesday - Friday. When I have that schedule I will modify as needed in SignUpGenious.
Bernel Road Park: I was advised there was an issue with some groups of evening players not following the posted rules for court rotation. I asked about their demographics and they pretty much fit what I would have wagered on. Family groups and college-aged players that most likely have not come up through a pickleball community. Their exposure to common etiquette and rules at courts is probably limited. With any implementation of something new, there will be problems. The best you can do is educate and set good examples. Patience is key.
State College YMCA: The Y will be offering a pickleball ladder for beginners and a league for intermediate and advanced players for July. If you are a Y member you probably received notification via an email from Drew. There is some availability or possible availability for non-member which would require some additional fees. If you need more information let me know and I will forward the email I received. It has a ton more information than the YMCA website.
Tyrone Tournament: The Tyrone Pickleball Club is hosting the One Day Fun Day pickleball tournament in early August. There are beginner, intermediate, and advance level brackets, but go to the poster for the cute names assigned to the brackets. It is all mixed doubles. If I can get healed by then, I might even go looking for a partner and sign up. Here is the link for more information: https://app.pickleballden.com/external-tournament/2582753. Also, see flyer below.
Weekly Tip: You remember me in the past standing on a soapbox reaching my 3 P's? Patience, placement and then power? Remember the video Steve P. and I did of defending the castle? Low and behold here is a video clip of an amazing point that demonstrates those practices: https://x.com/PPAtour/status/1806476035401392444.
I was going to continue with more about the drama with Joola, Gearbox and other "weaponized? paddles, USAPA, PPA, paddle testing but I figure I would let some more things develop. The one thought that was brought up in a podcast I watched was that eventually there will only be a small surviving group of paddle manufacturers. Some smaller ones will fail, some will get consumed by larger companies. The presenters likened it to golf and other sports where there are only a handful of equipment manufacturers. I hope you have a great week and I hope to see you on the court soon!
