The Pickle Jar
March 25-29
OK, here's the deal. I gave the content editor the weekend off so this will be a short and sweet trip around the Pickleverse.
The Centre: No pickleball at The Centre on Monday or Tuesday. A bummer but remember groups that do these big rentals are what keep the lights on and doors open. Options are to play outside weather permitting. I know there are calendar events created for Monday and Tuesday at 9:00 AM at Bernel Road Park on the TeamReach app. If someone wants to set up an afternoon session and you are not a leader let me know and I will post it for you. C3 Sports has four courts available across 3 daily sessions. Each session has one court set aside for drop-in play (max of 10 spots) and the rest are private group reservations. All of that is handled via the SignUpGenius below. There are 10 drop-in spots but if you guys network with each other you can reserve the private courts and create a mass social play perhaps. If you belong to the YMCA you can do one of their sessions. I believe all their sessions are now listed as open drop-in. If that works as advertised, I don't know. Of course, you could also go for a hike or some goat yoga for a change of pace.
Happy Spring by the way.
Tip Of The Week: Solo drop shot practice. Earlier this week I was waiting to do a PB 201 session and one of the drills I put everyone through is the SLINKLY drill. Each player starts at the NVZ (aka KITCHEN) line where one player feeds a cooperative shot to the person across the net and then that person has to hit a drop shot back to the person feeding the ball to them. If they land a ball in the NVZ they take a step back and the feeding player gives them another ball which they try to land in the kitchen. Each successful NVZ shot moves them back one step. Once the player reaches the baseline, they now take a step forward. When both players are at the NVZ line, they switch roles. I wanted to practice this and there was an empty court so I rolled the net to where it was 7 feet from the wall. I then moved back 7 feet from the net with the bucket of multi-color balls and worked on hitting as many into the NVZ as possible. If I hit the wall, that was too deep, if it hit the net, well you get the idea. I set a goal of 10 good drops before I stepped back or up. With players becoming more skilled, it is important to become proficient in multiple play styles. As the game has evolved and skills improved, hitting a 3rd shot drop is no longer an absolute. You need to be able to determine what the best shot is best for that particular moment. Drive or drop will often depend on what type of shot you are dealing with and what position your opponents have acquired. It is nice to have options.
Below are the links for the week. They have been modified to reflect offline venues. Have a great week and have fun.
